Sony’s PlayStation announced on Wednesday that it will raise the recommended retail price of its PlayStation 5 consoles by approximately $50 beginning August 21.
“Like many global companies, we are operating in a challenging economic climate,” PlayStation stated in a press release.
Former President Donald Trump’s tariffs have prompted several companies—including Shein and Adidas—to consider passing higher costs onto US consumers.
Sony’s price hike follows a similar decision by rival Nintendo, which also plans to raise US prices for its original Switch console, citing “market conditions” in an announcement earlier this month.
The PS5 launched amid great excitement in 2020 and quickly became the largest console launch in US history at the time.
Its popularity made it difficult for Sony to keep up with demand, leaving many gamers still struggling to find the console six months after its release.
Sony announced the following new prices for the PlayStation 5:
- PlayStation 5 — $549.99
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition — $499.99
- PlayStation 5 Pro — $749.99
